Scotiabank has supplied University of Calgary-affiliated Well Doc Alberta with funding under a pact signed when it bought MD Financial Management last year.

Well Doc Alberta, a Canada-based wellness forum for physicians led by a University of Calgary professor, received $1.6m in funding on Tuesday from financial services firm Scotiabank. The investment, to be supplied over three years, is the first in a ten-year affinity partnership between Scotiabank and professional body Canadian Medical Association (CMA) entered when Scotiabank bought physician-focused financial services unit MD Financial Management from the CMA in October 2018. Well Doc Alberta is preparing a wellness strategy for physicians in Alberta with the goal of promoting greater understanding of the area and engendering a positive approach that complements professionalism and excellence in patient care. The initiative is headed by Dr Jane Lemaire, a clinical professor of medicine at University of Calgary’s Department of Medicine and vice-chair for physician wellness and vitality, with support from Calgary’s clinical healthcare-focused W21C Research and Innovation Centre and the Alberta Medical Association (AMA). Glen Gowland, executive vice-president of global wealth management at Scotiabank, said: “Scotiabank’s contribution to Well Doc Alberta is ultimately an investment in the wellbeing of all Canadian physicians. We are proud to support Dr. Jane Lemaire and her partners at the AMA and University of Calgary, and to help support the CMA’s strategic vision of a vibrant profession.”
