Stanford-backed student support platform UpSwing has added $2m from investors including Impact America Fund to take its total to approximately $5m.

UpSwing, a US-based student support platform developer backed by Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, attracted $2m on Monday in a funding round backed by venture fund Impact America Fund. The round also featured VC firm Rethink Education, education-focused grant-making body Lumina Foundation and nonprofit school performance think-tank Strada Education Network. UpSwing started out as an online video platform providing coaching services, however it has since anchored its business around a student support product known as the Virtual Learning Centre. Virtual Learning Center features interactive tools for tutors and students that support learning outcomes. These include the video and audio communication channels and a virtual whiteboard for posting notes and annotations. The company believes the product is especially well-suited to non-traditional and diverse education markets in the US, such as rural communities and the country’s historically black colleges and universities. By 2020, UpSwing hopes to have helped 50,000 college students complete their degree. The fresh capital brings UpSwing’s total funding to approximately $5m, according to press releases and media reports. Stanford Graduate School of Business joined Rethink Education and Village Capital for the company’s $1.5m round in 2017, led by Lumina Impact Ventures.
