University of Twente’s ETC Solar has made its public debut as a subsidiary of a US-based Caltech spinout of the same name working on solar generation technology.

University of Twente has spun out a Netherlands-based business called ETC Solar to commercialise a technology enabling solar panels to produce more electricity.
ETC Solar B.V. has been formed as a subsidiary of US-based ETC Solar LLC, a California Institute of Technology spinout targeting the same field that was established in 2017.
ETC believes its technology will bring solar generation closer to its theoretical potential by using a geometric design that reduces electricity lost because the panel is partially covered in shade.
The spinout’s co-founders include Rebecca Saive, an assistant professor at Twente’s Complex Photonics Systems Institute, and Harry Atwater, Howard Hughes professor of applied physics and materials science at Caltech.
Saive and Atwater were assisted by Thomas Russell, a graduate of Caltech who co-founded the original US company.
