Paula Sorrell will join George Mason University as associate vice-president of innovation and economic development in May.

Paula Sorrell is to depart University of Michigan to become George Mason University’s associate vice-president of innovation and economic development from May 1.
Sorrell’s in-tray will include supervising George Mason’s Office of Tech Transfer along with its enterprise centre and innovation exchange.
She is also expected to work on collaborating with other universities and a $250m redevelopment of George Mason’s Arlington campus that will encompass a bespoke innovation district.
Sorrell started at University of Michigan in early 2016 as a lecturer in the College of Engineering and Center for Entrepreneurship
She was appointed director of the university’s Economic Growth Institute in 2017, bringing into her remit responsibility for economic development programming and applied research.
Sorrell was previously principal at consultancy Paula from 2015 until 2017, and vice-president of entrepreneurship, innovation and venture capital at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation from 2011 until 2015.
She completed bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Central Michigan University in marketing and marketing management, and remains on the board of several tech entrepreneurship-focused organisations.
