Free-roam VR experience technology company Holodeck VR has been backed by ProSiebenSat.1 Media, raising the prospect of business development collaborations with the corporate's television networks.

Holodeck VR, a Germany-based high-definition virtual reality (VR) headset creator spun out of Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS), obtained an unspecified amount of funding on Monday from mass media group ProSiebenSat.1 Media. Founded in 2017, Holodeck VR is working on VR goggles that rely on sensor fusion and optical tracking technology to display expansive worlds for the player to roam through regardless of whether they are playing from a large physical space. The platform, dubbed Holodeck, supports up to 20 players at any one time and is marketed towards clients planning engagements such as corporate team building, birthday parties and entertainment shows. ProSiebenSat.1’s investment will be used to expand the Holodeck VR platform and to introduce the technology in more locations. Holodeck VR will be considered for business development partnerships with ProSiebenSat.1’s television networks. Eun-Kyung Park, chief digital officer of entertainment at ProSiebenSat.1, said: “Besides believing in the technology and Holodeck VR, this is also an investment in an exciting and innovative growth market. “VR applications based on outstanding technology have the potential to excite the audience with totally new formats of interactive entertainment.“
