Basel Inkubator, created by University of Basel and University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, is winding down as the universities rethink their spinout support.

Basel Inkubator, a spinout incubator formed by University of Basel and University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland, is winding down operations, according to TeleBasel.
The incubator was created in 2009 by the two universities in collaboration with the Canton of Basel-Stadt and Eva – a local life sciences startup agency co-founded by the Swiss cantonal banks and three entrepreneurs. The program welcomed its first cohort the following year.
Basel Inkubator offered office space, conference rooms and laboratories to researchers hoping to establish a spinout. It also offered space to other startups when it was not fully occupied.
The incuabtor currently houses a dozen companies that will be moved into suitable alternative locations.
The two universities made the decision to shutter the incubator as part of plans to facilitate access to expertise to more spinouts in order to drive up the numbers of new companies.
They have entered into an open-ended collaboration with Eva effective January 1. It is not clear what exactly the future support for spinouts will look like.
